At OK!Sign, we are often asked: “Why can’t documents be initialed on your platform?” The short answer: in a digital context, initials provide no legal or technical added value. Digital signatures automatically protect the entire document — fully and legally binding.

What does Belgian law say about initials?

Under the Belgian Civil Code, a signature on the last page of a contract is sufficient to make the entire agreement legally binding. There is no legal requirement to initial each page separately.

This was recently confirmed by the Antwerp Court of Appeal in its judgment of 19 November 2019, which ruled that one signature is enough to cover all pages.

During the signing process, the content of the document is fully locked. Pages cannot be modified, deleted or replaced.

Each signature receives a fixed date through a qualified timestamp. The exact signing moment is legally established without ambiguity.
